Project description:
The Clarice Smith Center is one of the largest facilities of its kind on any university campus in the country and features six outstanding performance halls – all acoustically treated and isolated: a 1,342 seat proscenium theatre; a 1,100-seat concert hall; the 650-seat and 200-seat theatre; the 300-seat recital hall; a 180-seat Dance Theatre, and a 100-seat black box theatre.
The Center also is the home of The Michelle Smith Library with more than 300,000 holdings/recordings, one of the largest of its kind in North America.
The main mechanical system consists of acoustically treated low velocity air handlers delivering treated air to VAV terminal units with hot water heat and constant volume systems. All specifications call for ultra-low sound levels. Low air flow volume and low supply temperature control strategies minimize equipment noise generation.
Background:
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center was designed and constructed to be a world class facility that would attract the highest level of professional and student talent to the University Maryland campus and surrounding area.
