Growing Shrimp is Big Business

1 May, 2009 - 03:00
In the suburbs of Lansing, MI, far from the Pacific coast, there is a huge tank of salt water filled with many small creatures. Watching this tank, it is not uncommon to see a live shrimp flip into the air. But Andrew Wesolek just shrugs it off. He has seen startled shrimp before. “Yeah, they like to jump,” he notes.

Time-proportional control: more from an on/off switch

1 May, 2009 - 03:00
Time-proportional control, a form of pulse-width modulation, is a mathematical technique that allows a feedback controller to use an on/off or discrete actuator as if it were a continuous actuator capable of generating control efforts anywhere between 0% and 100%. The trick is to turn the actuator on and off for periods proportional to the desired control effort.

Sierra Instruments releases new video explaining operation and functions of its mass flow controller.

New flowmeter combines mechanical and electronic functions

16 April, 2009 - 03:00
Proven variable area flowmeter gains sophistication with digital signal processing technology. Solid state design electronically senses movement of the magnetic piston assembly and provides accurate, repeatable flow measurements. The device has no mechanical linkages, which results in longer operating life. While pre-calibrated, it still can be configured for...

Large tag count SCADA systems need proper planning

1 April, 2009 - 03:00
A lot of SCADA systems involving telemetry, especially in the water/wastewater industry, have a minimal amount of data coming from each site. A wastewater collection system with 100 sites, for example, might have only 1,000 to 2,000 tags. (These data points can be either an analog value like "level" or a digital value like "pump running.
